Ninja first heard one of our songs on Sirius XM Radio. One day he played our music on his Twitch channel while we were watching. We freaked out and messaged him on Twitch in chat. He also freaked out that the song’s creators watched his stream. We started chatting and he premiered our song, Old Friends, live and on his Twitch stream. The chat exploded with over 100,000 live viewers tuning in. It was surreal. We stayed up that night until 3am texting with him about making a music video for Old Friends. Ninja wanted the video to be something that could inspire and help others. The concept, script, and art style were all decided that night with him. The next week he flew us out to his home town to discuss the music video and how he could help grow our music.
For the music video, we decided to use the metaphor of masks being something you wear when you’re grieving or struggling. A mask is something that hides you from others and prevents anything else bad reaching you. It takes things like friendship and family to help you heal and become confident enough in yourself to take it off.
The music video was filmed by director Jon Kimble. He has directed commercials for Lebron James, filmed championship fights of Robert Easter for Showtime, and worked with other brands like Gerber, Forever 21, Dum Dums, Master P, the University of the Toledo, and ESPN. He directed Lilli Reinharts debut feature film, Gibsonburg, which premiered at Dances with Films in LA.
We wrote this song (Old Friends) when we found out one of our best friends had stage four cancer. He was someone who always helped us film our videos. This project was the last video he ever helped film. He passed away days before the video was released. The song and video are about and dedicated to him.
